I have looked and maybe I have overlooked, but what it the objective with scrapping items?

It was for repeating Gear in the past and in the future as I remember correct it would be to upgrade gear
we have added this update, then nobody liked that update so we removed the thing that gears breaks. Anyways scrape will soon find a place in the game it will be needed and usable material
I have over 40K scrap, so it would be nice that it can be used in the future
